Biographical History
Ralph Waldo Swetman was the fourth president of the Oswego State Normal School (Oswego, New York) serving from 1933 to 1947. Dr. Swetman's administration covered a turbulent and difficult era in the college's history. Dr. Swetman's administration dealt with the effects of the Great Depression and the Second World War which caused severe economic problems and philosophical shifts within the institutional structure of the college. He is best remembered for adding specialized classes and increasing the number of degrees offered by the college. The intense stress of the president's work habits eventually led to a general breakdown of his health in 1946. He resigned the following year never to fully recover from the physical fitigue of office.
