The Montgomery Land Office was established by an act of 1832 July 10 to administer the Tallapoosa Land District in the State of Ala. The office opened on 1834 Jan. 1 and originally was made up of the lower Creek Indian lands. After 1865 various Alabama land offices began to close and the administration of their records was transferred to Montgomery. By 1905 the Montgomery Land Office had absorbed the offices of Mardisville, Tuscaloosa, Demopolis, Greenville, Elba, Mobile, Huntsville, St. Stephens, Cahaba, Sparta, and part of Lebanon. The Montgomery Land Office was abolished on 1927 June 30.
