Biographical History

Agnes Spence was a longtime resident of Austin, Texas. Shw was a descendent of Thomas Spence. Thomas Spence and his wife Agnes Telfer moved to Austin, Texas in the 1870s from Scotland. Thomas was following his two brothers James Hall and Robert. Thomas and Agnes had four children that lived to adulthood; John, Fannie, Esther and Hugh. Hugh married Henrietta Speegle on June 14, 1904 at the First Presbyterian Church. Henrietta's family first moved to Austin in 1839. Hugh and Henrietta lived on East Avenue and then in Hyde Park and Hugh worked for the City of Austin. They had 2 children, Agnes Telfer and Thomas Jackson.

Agnes Telfer was baptized in June of 1907. She graduated from Austin High School in 1922 and from the University of Texas in 1926. Agnes was accepted to medical school but her father and doctor advised against it because they felt the physical demands of medical school might be detrimental to her health. She became a teacher and held a variety of positions both in Austin and in Galveston. In 1995 she moved back to Austin.
