Biographical History

A British Joint Services sub-aqua expedition was undertaken in October 1985 off Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. One of its objectives was to trace the wreckage of William Dampier's vessel, the "Roebuck" which sank off Ascension Island in 1701. No remains of the ship were discovered. The expedition's detailed report concludes that the wreck probably lies under the deep sands of Long Beach, Georgetown.
