Biographical History

The foundation of CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne) in 1928 has been called the beginning of the "academic" phase of modern architecture. In two periods, 1930-1934 and 1950-1956, CIAM was the major instrument through which the ideas of modern architecture and town planning were made known to the world; during the war years it maintained the nucleus of an international network of communications among progressive-minded architects.

The International Congress for Modern Architecture (Congrès internationaux d'architecture moderne, or CIAM) was an international architectural organization created in 1928 to unify the architectural profession in a search for solutions for the problems of urban areas. It provided a technical forum for discussions about city planning, architectural education, industrialization of building techniques, legislation, social needs, etc. The Belgian section secretariat was founded in 1934, through the collaboration of Victor Bourgeois with the group "L'Equerre" of Liège.
