Biographical History
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) was created by the University of Texas at Austin to provide numerous education, extracurricular services to both high school students and teachers throughout the state of Texas. Originally founded in 1909 as part of the UT Extension Bureau, the UIL began as the Debating League of Texas High Schools. An athletic component, dubbed the Interscholastic Athletic Association, was also created. In 1913, the two departments merged to form the University Interscholastic League. The UIL operates under the Vice President for Community and School Relations and is one of the largest interschool organizations in the world. The UIL governs extracurricular events in three areas: academic, athletic and music.
