American folklorist, storyteller, and collector of folktales. Works include Grandfather Tales, the Jack Tales, and American Folk Tales and Songs.

Richard Chase was born in 1904 near Huntsville, Alabama. He was a folklorist, editor, and author. His renown as a storyteller of Appalachian folktales was paralleled by the numerous collections of folktales he edited. He died in 1988.
