Biographical History

Rev. Samuel Foxcroft (1735?-1807) served as the first minister of the Congregational Church in New Gloucester, Me., for twenty-eight years, 1765 to 1793, and was appointed Justice of the Peace for Cumberland County, Me., in 1796. His son, Joseph Ellery Foxcroft (1773-ca. 1853) owned a general store in New Gloucester and served as postmaster for forty years. He was also active in exploring the inland area of Maine and in the state Democratic-Republican Party.
