Biographical History

James Brunton Stephens was a poet, novelist, school teacher, and public servant. He taught at the Normal School in Brisbane, Kelvin Grove and Ashgrove, and was appointed to the Colonial Secretary's Office as dispatch writer in 1883 and eventually became Under Secretary.

Born in Scotland, educated at Edinburgh University, the poet Brunton Stephens migrated to Queensland in 1866. He became a headmaster before entering the Chief Secretary's Department, becoming its undersecretary. Several of his poems were published in 1885, 1888, 1902 and 1912.
