Ira Thomas Wyche, a native of Ocracoke, N.C., served as major general of the 79th Infantry Division (March, 1944-August, 1945) and Inspector General of the Army (1947-1948).
Ira Thomas Wyche (b. October 16, 1887, Ocracoke, North Carolina-d. July 8, 1981, in Pinehurst, North Carolina), United States Army general who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in the class of 1911 and served in World Wars I and II. As a major general he commanded the 79th Infantry Division throughout its battle operations in the European Theater, and became commanding general of the VIII Corps in Germany in May 1945. He was appointed Inspector General of the Army in January 1947, and retired in September 1948.
