Historian; of Maine.

From the description of Hugh D. McLellan papers on Gorham, Me., history, 1872-1877. (Maine Historical Society Library). WorldCat record id: 234177606

Hugh Davis McLellan (1805-1878) was born in Gorham, Me., the son of Alexander McLellan (1780-1838) and Chloe Davis (1782-1813). Hugh McLellan attended Gorham Academy before becoming a merchant in Gorham. He was chairman of the board of selectmen in Gorham from 1842-1844, and a representative to the Maine state legislature from 1846-1848.

In 1833, McLellan married Elizabeth Prescott Lewis (1816-1838), and the McLellans had a daughter Katharine (1836-1913), who married Rev. George Lewis (1839-1910) of Bridgeton, Me. For many years, Hugh McLellan collected material for a history of Gorham which was unfinished at the time of his death. His daughter Katharine completed the work, which was published as _The History of Gorham, Maine_, in 1903.
