Rabbi and Social Reformer.
Newfield was born in Homanna, Hungary in 1868. In 1894, he migrated to the United States and attended Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio. A year later he was ordained a rabbi and accepted duties at Temple Emanu-el in Birmingham, Ala. In 1901, he married Leah Ullman, the daughter of Birmingham educational leader Samuel Ullman. Newfield served as rabbi at Temple Emanu-el until his death in 1940.
