Biographical History

The League of Women Voters was created after Congress passed the "Susan B. Anthony" amendment, which granted women the right to vote. (After ratification by the states, this became the nineteenth amendment to the U.S. Constitution). The League succeeded the National American Woman Suffrage Association and state groups such as the Kentucky Equal Rights Association. It is a nonpartisan public service group dedicated to encouraging voter registration and to informing the public about important issues. It is in the latter role that the League has sponsored debates between presidential candidates.
