Samuel McKee was born near Lexington, Virginia, in 1774. After formal schooling and studying law in his native state, McKee began practicing law in Somerset, Kentucky. He served as surveyor of Pulaski County, then moved to Lancaster in Garrard County where he also practiced law. From 1802 to 1808 he served in the Kentucky House of Representatives. McKee was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1809 to 1817. During his Congressional service, McKee saw military service as well on the staff of General William Henry Harrison in the War of 1812.
