Biographical History

John Henry Smeath was born March 18, 1902, in Montpelier, Vermont, to James Charles Smeath and Frances Mae Brown Smeath. Despite his family's financial hardships, he chose to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, beginning in September 1923. On October 10, 1928, Smeath married Alice Delores Anderson, with whom he had five children. Smeath died from cardiac arrest on January 20, 1994 in Springville, Utah. Maude Frances Smeath Weight, John Henry's sister, was born July 11, 1900, also in Montpelier, Vermont. On June 4, 1924, she married Verne W. Weight in the Salt Lake Temple. She was an expert whistler, a skill she used while performing with the USO during World War II. She moved to Provo, Utah, after 51 years in Los Angeles, California. She died of natural causes in Provo on November 23, 1998.
