Knowles, Taylor & Knowles was founded by Isaac Knowles and Isaac Harvey in 1854 in East Liverpool, Ohio. The partners produced Rockingham and yellow queensware. In 1870, Knowles brought son Homer Knowles and son-in-law John Taylor into the firm and produced whiteware, yellowware and ironstone pieces. The pottery was helmed by various sons and family members until joining the American Chinaware Corporation in 1929. After only two years this combined company went into receivership and Knowles, Taylor & Knowles ceased operations for good.

William McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio, in 1843 and enlisted in the Union Army when the Civil War broke out. At 34, McKinley won a seat in Congress. In 1891 he was elected governor of Ohio, serving two terms. William McKinley became president of the United States in 1897 and was re-elected to a second term in 1900. In September 1901, while standing in a receiving line at the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition, McKinley was shot twice by an anarchist. He died eight days later.
