Biographical History

Henry Ellsworth Wood, mining engineer, was born in Illinois and at the age of thirteen went with his father, William Cowper Wood (1821-1889), to Colorado with Major John Wesley Powell in 1868 on an expedition to cover the headwaters of the Colorado River. Wood graduated from Yale University in 1876 and went immediately to Colorado to work in the mines in Boulder County. In 1878 he opened an assay office and laboratory in Leadville,and in 1889 he established the same business in Denver. In 1898 he added the Henry E. Wood Ore Testing Works, which became internationally known.
