Biographical History

The Hubbell, Groot, Pennock, Collins, and Thurston families were related to the Sager family by marriage. George Josiah Sager was a soldier in the Civil War who marched to Georgia and sent back letters and sketches. Emily (Emma) Sager Hubbell was active in the Woman's Relief Corps of the Grand Army of the Republic (1882-1912). Rebecca Sager Hubbell Pennock wrote and collected poetry and prose.

Mary Sing-Gien Carleton was head of a Christian school for girls in Foochow, Fukien, China (1927-1941); she was the Chinese-born, American-educated adopted daughter of Dr. Mary Carleton, a missionary.

David Whitney Thurston was a minister in Central New York from 1841 until 1892; M.C. Hand was a local history author.
