Biographical History

Maurice R. Marchello (1902-1973) was born in Coal City, Illinois, son of the first Italian immigrants to the city, Maurizio A. Marchello and Anna (Nigretto) Marchello. He began work as a child, first in the mines and then for the railroads, but continued his education throughout, earning a law degree in 1926 and spending a year in Rome on a scholarship. He practiced law in Chicago, Illinois, served as attorney for the state of Illinois at various state agencies, was active in the Democratic Party and in the Italian Democratic Club (9th Ward). In 1961, he began a second career as journalist and author, writing for the Italian American Chicago papers Fra Noi and La Tribuna, and then authoring several books, including Crossing the Tracks and Black Coal for White Bread.
