Mordecai Manuel Noah was born in Philadelphia to Jewish parents of German descent; he was raised by his maternal grandparents, and apprenticed to a carver. He had a diverse career, holding numerous minor political offices, but was best known as a journalist and playwright, becoming one of America's best editorial writers. He also promoted the restoration of Israel, staunchly supported American drama, and co-founded New York University.
