Biographical History
Isabel L. Eckles was born in New Castle, Delaware in 1877. She relocated to New Mexico and served as: a teacher in the Silver City Public Schools; Superintendent of the Grant County Public schools; State Superintendent of Public Instruction for two terms; and as Superintendent of the Santa Fe Public schools. After retirement from the education profession, Eckles served as State Director for the Division of Service Projects for the Works Progress Administration, later the Work Projects Administration. Eckles died in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1971.
Isabel Lancaster Eckles was born Sept. 8, 1877 in New Castle, Delaware and died Jan. 25, 1971 in Santa Fe. Isabel taught in the Silver City public school for 16 years, served as Superintendent of Grant County Schools for two terms and as State Superintendent of Schools for two terms. Following this, Isabel was made Superintendent of Santa Fe Schools and remained in that position for 10 years. Upon retirement from the education field, she accepted a position with the woman's division of WPA for New Mexico and was instrumental in founding the museums at Roswell and Silver City.
