Biographical History
The Fire Insurance Society of Philadelphia was organized in October 1901 at the suggestion of Houston Dunn. It was incorporated in December 1909; and renamed the Insurance Society of Philadelphia in 1925. The purpose of the society was to provide a forum for persons engaged in the fire insurance business. It maintained a library and meeting room and held a series of monthly meetings at which one of the members would deliver an address upon some aspect of fire insurance or fire prevention. The society also held annual banquets.
