Biographical History

Paul Kohlmann was born on March 20, 1766 in Alsace, France. He had already been ordained to the priesthood when he entered the Society of Jesus on July 12, 1814. His younger brother Anthony had preceded him into the Society and became superior of the American mission in 1817 and tenth president of Georgetown College in 1820. But for the years 1815 and 1819, which were spent at White Marsh in Maryland, most of Paul Kohlmann's life as a Jesuit was spent in the Pennsylvania missions. The annual catalogs of the Maryland Province of the Society list Fr. Kohlmann as being stationed at the Conewago and Goshenhoppen missions from about 1816 until 1835. In 1836 Fr. Kohlmann began teaching theology at Georgetown College and remained there until his death on Oct. 10, 1838.
