Biographical History

The position of Associate Provost for Educational and Support Services began in 1985 with the appointment of Marianne K. Smythe as Acting Assistant Provost (the title was not officially conferred until November 1988). The position's responsibilities included overseeing a number of University units that previously had reported directly to the Provost, as well as representing the Provost on several University committees and task forces. Carol Reuss succeeded Smythe in 1987 and served until 1994. During that time, the duties of the position remained roughly the same, though the units supervised changed somewhat.

The position of Assistant/Associate Provost for Educational and Support Services began in 1985 with the appointment of Marianne K. Smythe as Acting Assistant Provost. The responsibilities of the position included oversight of several Academic Affairs units that had previously reported directly to the Provost. Initially these included the Division of Extension and Continuing Education (later renamed Division of Continuing Education), the North Carolina Botanical Garden, the Ackland Art Museum, the Institute for Research in Social Science, the Center for Urban and Regional Studies (which became part of the Department of City and Regional Planning in 1988), the Morehead Planetarium, the Highway Safety Research Center, and the Media and Instructional Support Center (disbanded in 1986). In addition to supervising these units, the Assistant Provost acted as the Provost's representative on several uuniversity committees and task forces, including the Minority Task Force, which was concerned with undergraduate recruitment.

Carol Reuss succeeded Smythe as Assistant Provost on 1 July 1987. In November 1988, the title of her position was changed to Associate Provost for Educational and Support Services to reflect Chancellor Paul Hardin's redefinition of the Office of Provost. Also around this time, administrative responsibility for the new National Center for the Paideia Program was assigned to the position. Effective 1 September 1990, however, the Paideia Program was moved to the School of Education. In December 1990, the Institute for Research in Social Science and the Highway Safety Research Center began reporting to the Associate Provost and Dean of Research. (Still later the Highway Safety Research Center moved to the Division of Health Affairs.)

Carol Reuss continued as Associate Provost for Educational and Support Services until 1 July 1994, when she was succeeded by Marilyn V. Yarbrough. At that time, the Associate Provost had oversight of the Ackland Art Museum, Morehead Planetarium, Division of Continuing Education, Summer School, and the Center for Teaching and Learning. She also has responsibilities involving space allocation, quality improvement strategies, the reaccreditation process, and new public service initiatives.
