Biographical History

George Ward Stocking (1892-1975) was an economist who specialized in the oil industry. He was a professor, author, and a federal U.S. government employee. His work with the government included chairman of the Petroleum Labor Policy Board of the National Recovery Administration, director of the Fuels Division of the Office of Price Administration (OPA), and director of the Federal Reserve Branch of Dallas, San Antonio Branch, from 1943-1946. In 1947, he began teaching at Vanderbilt and helped form its economics department. He was the author of Middle East Oil: A Study in Political and Economic Controversy (1970), and he wrote several reports and articles about the oil industry. He began writing a book about anti-trust legislation but did not finish it before he died.
