Biographical History

Ira Boyd Jones (1851-1927) was a native of Newberry, S.C.; graduated from Erskine College in 1870 and admitted to the bar in 1873. Speaker of the S.C. House of Representatives and Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, 1890-1896. Vice President of the S.C. Constitutional Convention of 1895. Served on the S.C. Supreme Court, 1896-1912, as both an Associate and the Chief Justice. Resigned as Chief Justice in 1912 and ran unsuccessfully for Governor; son of Charles M .Jones (1822-1872) and Mary Jane Neel (d. 1914); husband of Rebecca Wyse (1854-1917);
