Hezekiah Lord Hosmer (1814-1893), first chief justice of Montana Territory, 1864-68; postmaster at Virginia City, 1869-72.
First chief justice of Montana Territory.
Hezekiah L. Hosmer was born in 1814, in Hudson, N.Y. He began to study law in Cleveland, Ohio, at the age of sixteen. From 1848 to 1855, he was editor of the Toledo Blade. President Lincoln appointed Hosmer the first chief justice of the Montana Territory Supreme Court under the Organic Act (May 26, 1864). Hosmer reached Montana in Oct. 1864 and opened the first session of the first district court in the territory in December at Virginia City. Hosmer moved to San Francisco, Calif., in 1872 and remained there until his death on 31 Oct. 1893.
