Born in Sylacauga, Ala., graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, BS 1939, MS 1941. Served with 45th Field Artillery in World War II. Political career: Alabama House of Representatives, 1959-63; Alabama Senate, 1963-66; U.S. House for Alabama's 3rd district, 1966-88. Served on House Armed Services Committee and co-authored Defense Department Reorganization Act of 1986.
