Biographical History
Arctic explorer; physician.
American explorer.
Explorer and physician.
Isaac Israel Hayes (1832-1881) was born on March 5, 1832, in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was a physician and explorer known for his explorations of the Arctic. He received his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1853. Hayes served as a surgeon on the Second Grinnell Expedition that explored the areas north of Greenland and sought the Open Polar Sea. Between 1860 and 1861, Hayes went on another expedition on the vessel United States, and returned claiming that he traveled to the furthest point north and recorded open sea slightly beyond 80° N, which was later determined to be erroneous. He died on December 7, 1881.
