Biographical History
Fay Godwin (neé Simmonds) was born in Berlin in 1931, the daughter of Sydney Simmonds, a British Consular official and his wife, Stella, an American artist. She met Anthony James Wylie (Tony) Godwin when she was working at John Murray publishers and they married in 1961. The couple had two sons, Nicholas and Jeremy and Godwin's interest in photography began as a hobby during the 1960s. When she divorced in 1969 Godwin decided to become professional photographer.
Godwin's early work included photographs of key literary figures including Ted Hughes, Philip Larkin, Harold Pinter and Jean Rhys. She later became famous for her landscape photography and worked on a number of collaborative publications including The Oldest Road: an Exploration of the Ridgeway (1975), co-written with J. R. L. Anderson and Remains of Elmet (1979) with Ted Hughes.
