Biographical History
The Savannah Ordnance Depot, Savannah, Georgia, was organized as a field depot during the Civil War. In April 1864, it became the Savannah Arsenal under the supervision of the Chief of Ordnance.
The Confederate States of America Army may have created the position of Purchasing Commissary of Subsistence to oversee the distribution of food and other supplies to the Confederate troops. This position could have fallen under the Quartermaster bureau.
After secession in 1861, the Confederate States of America (CSA) created a war department and three main armies, or corps, the largest of which was the Army of Northern Virginia. However, the CSA relied heavily on state-level brigades and regiments throughout the Civil War. Similarly modeled to the Union armies, the CSA military consisted of infantry, artillery, and cavalry. Infantry consisted of three corps, which split into three infantry divisions, plus an artillery battalion. Each division consisted of three to four brigades, each brigade containing four to six regiments. An infantry regiment consisted of 10 companies, each with 1,100 men and officers. A company was then divided into two platoons. The majority of the CSA's regiments were volunteer outfits. Artilleries also consisted of regiments, which were composed of batteries, rather than companies. Each battery included 100 men and four to six cannons. The CSA's cavalry consisted of regiments divided into battalions, with each battalion consisting of 10 to 12 troops. Troops were further divided into squadrons.
The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought in Virginia on 13 December 1862. The Union army of 125,000 led by General Burnside was attempting to march towards Richmond. The Confederate forces of 80,000 under Gen. Lee repulsed the Union army. The Union loss was over 12,000; the Confederate lost 5,000.
The Confederate States of America existed from 1861 until its armies surrendered to the United States of America in 1865.
Company F, 38th Georgia was commanded by J.C. Thornton and was organized October 17, 1861. Company G, 38th Georgia was commanded by George Eberhart and was organized March 4, 1862. Company H, 38th Georgia was commanded by R.T. Eberhart and was organized March 5, 1861.
This was a military commission appointed in 1862 by General P. O. Hebert to hear cases in San Antonio, Texas, of persons arrested because of Union sympathies, chiefly among German Texans, during the Civil War. Texas served the Confederate States of America during the war between the states.
Ft. Pulaski (Ga.) was held by the Confederate Army until its surrender on April 11, 1862 by Col. Charles H. Olmstead commander of the 1st Georgia Infantry Regiment.
