Shaffer, Charles Milton, 1913-2004

Charles Milton Shaffer, a native of Greensboro, N.C., attended the University of North Carolina, where he played football and received a B.S. in commerce in 1935. After several years in business, Shaffer returned to Chapel Hill in 1952 to be the University's director of development, a position he held until 1981. Shaffer was active in Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, and other civic organizations in Chapel Hill and in the Episcopal Chapel of the Cross. Shaffer married Charlotte Blanton Winborne, also a graduate of the University of North Carolina (A.B. 1934). Charlotte Winborne Shaffer was the daughter of John Wallace Winborne (1884-1966), who served on the North Carolina Supreme Court, 1937-1962, and was chief justice, 1956-1962.

Resident of Supai, Arizona, during the early 1930's to early 1940's. Mr. Shaffer was the principal and Mrs. Shaffer was a teacher at the Havasupai Reservation school.
