Biographical History
Julia Bowman Robinson was born in St. Louis, Missouri on Dec. 8, 1919. She began her college career in 1936 at San Diego State College, majoring in mathematics, then transferred to UC Berkeley for her senior year. Robinson received 3 degrees from Berkeley: A.B. 1940, M.A. 1941, and Ph.D. in 1948. In 1941, she married Raphael Robinson, who had taught her number theory. She did research in Berkeley's statistical laboratory under Jerzy Neyman, and occasionally taught as a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics. In 1976, after she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, Robinson was appointed professor of mathematics, a position which she held until shortly before her death from leukemia in 1985.
