Biographical History

The Washington School House was formed on March 4, 1820, when a group of Newark residents met and resolved to open a schoolhouse, and to circulate subscriptions to build the schoolhouse. Two years later, the schoolhouse, located at Orange and Essex Streets, was occupied by its first teacher and students. The school was the first free, or, public, school in the City of Newark. In May 1863, the ownership of the school was transferred to the City of Newark, and by 1868, the Washington School ceased to exist by that name as the Newark Public Schools rebuilt and expanded throughout the late nineteenth century.
