Ellis Reynolds Shipp was born on January 20, 1847, and moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah, with her parents in 1852. Her mother died in 1861, and after her father's remarriage Shipp lived with her grandparents. She married Milford Shipp in May 1866 and moved for a time to Fillmore before settling in Salt Lake City. The couple had ten children, four of whom died in infancy. Milford Shipp eventually married three plural wives, including Margaret Curtis, who followed Brigham Young's call for the education of female doctors and enrolled in the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1874. When Margaret returned home a year later, Shipp took her place at the school and graduated with high honors, and also studied medicine at the University of Michigan. Shipp returned to Utah as one of its first female doctors and founded the School of Nursing and Obstetrics in 1879, and also served on the Relief Society General Board from 1898-1907. She died in Salt Lake City on January 31, 1939.
