Biographical History
Frank Thomson served as president of the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1897 to 1899. Born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, in 1851, Mr. Thomson spent his entire career working on railroads. He served in the Union army during the Civil War, when he worked for the U.S. Military Railroads in the South and Southwest. After leaving the military in June 1864, he began working for the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1871 and 1872, he was manager of transportation for an entourage escorting the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia on a railroad trip around the United States and Canada. Mr. Thomson was elected second vice president of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1882 and first vice president in 1888. He was promoted to president in 1897 but died after two years of service, in 1899.
