Biographical History
The USANC was administered by the National Lutheran Council (NLC) from 1947 through 1966; as a separate standing body from 1967-1976; and as LWM from 1977-1987. The USANC and its successor body LWM worked in cooperation with the Lutheran World Federation's Department of World Service and Department of World Mission (later Department of Church Cooperation) to provide aid to those in countries suffering from war and natural disasters. LWM was terminated in 1987 with the establishment of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. USANC General Secretaries included Paul C. Empie (NLC Director 1948-1966 and USANC General Secretary.
1967-1972, 1974-1975); Carl H. Mau, Jr. (1974-1975); Paul A. Wee (1976-1986); and Harold T. Hanson (1986-1987).
