Biographical History
The American Pen Women began as a professional women's organization for writers, poets, and artists in 1897. Their purpose was to provide a forum in which women could find help, camaraderie, and the resources to advance their careers. The league grew quickly and by 1921 became the National League of American Pen Women with chapters throughout the U.S. The D.C. chapter began in 1921 with Leona Patterson Tiller as the first president.
