Biographical History

Media Services was formed in 1976 when the departments of Instructional Media Services, Instructional Television, KUED-TV and KUER-FM were consolidated into one organization under the direction of the Vice President of Academic Affairs. It was later placed under the administration of the Vice President for University Relations. Media Services underwent further expansion with the establishment of the State Educational Telecommunications Operations Center (SETOC) in 1984 and of KULC, Channel 9, in 1986.

KUED Television, Channel 7, went on the air in January, 1958. KUER-FM Radio began as a student-operated station in 1959. Both were originally part of the President's Office. In 1962 Radio and Television services was organized under the supervision of the Dean of Continuing Education to oversee broadcasting activities.

In 1976 a new organization, Media Services, was formed which included KUED, KUER, Instructional Television, Educational Media (which included "micro-teaching"), and Correspondence Study (later renamed Center for Independent Study and Development). The purpose of the new organization was to consolidate all University media activities into one organization to provide media service to the University and public at large. Media Services is now part of the office of the Vice President for University Relations.

Keith M. Enger was appointed the first Director of Radio and Television Services in 1962. In 1964 Rex L. Campbell became director and remained in the position until 1975. Dennis Peterson was appointed the first Director of Media Services in 1976, along with Robert M. Reed as General Manager of KUED, and Donald Smith as General Manager of KUER. Oscar John Vetterli was Director of Instructional Television, Stephen Hess was Director of Educational Media, and Dale Montgomery was Director of the Center for Independent Study and Development. Milton Davis was Associate Director of Media Services and Coordinator of Radio and Television Translators.

Milton Davis was named Acting General Manager of KUED in 1978 with Bruce L. Christensen becoming General Manager in 1979. In 1980 Christensen became Director of Media Services and Fred C. Esplin became General Manager of KUED. Donal Smith remained General Manager of KUER through 1985. In 1982 Milton Davis became Director of Media Services. He was succeeded in 1985 by Stephen Hess.

Currently (1993-1994), Stephen Hess is Executive Director of Media Services, Fred C. Esplin is General Manager of KUED, John P. Greene is General Manager of KUER, James R. Baird is Director of Instructional Media Services, and Helen Lacy is General Manager of instructional television station KULC-TV (Channel 9).
