Biographical History
Farm labourer. Indentured to Thomas Peel, promotor of a scheme for the founding of a settlement at Swan River, Western Australia. Peel, who was granted 250, 000 acres of land, reached W.A. in December 1829 with 300 settlers. Inefficiency and ignorance of local conditions rapidly brought about the failure of his scheme. When released from his indenture to Peel, Lipscombe left for Tasmania, where he became a market gardener, businessman, and Member of Parliament.
