Biographical History

The Glasgow University Geological Society was founded in March 1907 with the object of the promotion of the study of Geology and the diffusion of Geological information among its members . Dr Horne of the Geological Survey of Scotland gave the opening address.

The office bearers of the Society are a President and Honorary President, Vice-President and Honourary Vice-President, Joint Honorary Secretaries, an Honorary Treasurer, and a Committee voted into office at Easter of each year. Professor J.W. Gregory, DSc, FRS, was the Society's first Honorary President.

The Society was known for its annual dances and other social events including field trips and excursions to local areas of geological interest. In the 1950s the Society was one of the sponsors of the Faculty of Science Annual Ball. It also ran a library containing a good selection of text-books and books of general geological interest to members and produced a magazine, Outcrop , for its members. Membership of the Society also carried associate membership of the Glasgow Geological Society, which was included in the membership fee.

In 1999 the University's Geology department merged with Earth Sciences and the Society was renamed the Glasgow University Earth Science Society (GUESS). The Society was still in existence in 2007.
