Biographical History
The Cigar Makers National Union of the United States formed in 1864 with delegates from local unions in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and other cities in attendance. The Union became international in 1867 with the affiliation of Canadian locals. In 1875, the Cigar Makers of New York affiliated with the CMIUA and became Local 144. Samuel Gompers was the Local's president and Adolph Strasser was financial secretary. Gompers was appointed an international organizer and in 1886 became a vice president. The Cigar Makers affiliated with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Workers Union in 1974.
Formed in 1864 as the Cigar Makers National Union of the United States.
The Union became international in 1867 with the affiliation of the Canadian Locals. The Cigar Makers have campaigned for sick, death, and out-of-work benefits, a union label, shorter work day, and trade union group insurance, while fighting against prison contract labor and child labor.
