Biographical History
First Bishop of Georgia. Presided over the Episcopal Church of the Confederate States during the Civil War, yet was instrumental in reuniting the Northern and Southern Churches after the War.

Stephen Elliott (August 31, 1806-December 21, 1866) was born in Beaufort, South Carolina to the famous naturalist, Stephen Elliott, Sr. Elliott graduated from Harvard University in 1824. He practiced law in both Charleston and Beaufort in South Carolina from 1827 until 1833. In 1840, he was elected the first bishop of the Diocese of Georgia for the Episcopal Church. He served as the rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Savannah, Georgia. In 1844, Elliott was appointed Provisional Bishop of Florida. He was actively involved in the Montpelier Institute, a girl's academy active from 1842-1850, in Monroe County, Georgia. In 1860, Elliott was one of the founding members of the University of the South. Elliott also served as a president of the Georgia Historical Society. John Gibbes Barnwell Elliott (September 26, 1841-1921) was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, the second son of seven children to Bishop Stephen Elliott and Charlotte Bull Barnwell. During the Civil War, he served with the South Carolina College Corps at the bombardment of Fort Sumter and as a lieutenant of the Light Artillery in the 10th Regiment of the Georgia Regulars. He later taught as a professor of chemistry and health officer at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee from 1870-1885. John Elliott married Harriott Lucas Huger in 1870.
