J. Mitchell owned a general mercantile store on French Prairie in the Willamette Valley. The site later became part of the town of Gervais. Accounts appear for several well-known citizens, such as Henry Failing, William Barlow, Antoine Lucier, and H. D. Boon.
John Mitchell was the agent for American Prisoners of War during the War of 1812. He had previously served as the Consul of the United States to St. Jago (Santiago), Cuba.
Epithet: poet of Aberdeen
John Mitchell was a graduate of Victoria College of the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall. He practiced law for 28 years, but his real love was writing. In 1934, he published his most famous work, The Yellow Briar, under the pseudonym Patrick Slater. At the time of his death in 1951, he had just completed The Settlement of York County, which had been commissioned by Muncipal Corporation of the County of York to mark the centennial of the beginnings of municipal government in the two Canadas.
