Biographical History
The first meeting of the Board of Normal School Principals was called by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction in 1920. The name of the board, as reflected in the minutes of their meetings, changed as the designation of the schools they directed changed. In June 1929, the name was changed to Board of Presidents, State Teachers Colleges. In June 1958, the name changed to Board of Presidents, State Colleges. These boards were composed of the presidents (earlier called principals) of each state college, plus representatives from the state Department of Public Instruction (later the Department of Education). With the creation of the State System of Higher Education in 1983, the composition of the board changed to private individuals, students, officials from the Education Department, and state legislators appointed by the Governor of Pennsylvania and approved by the legislature.
