Biographical History

Physicist. Briggs was head of the Physics Section, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), later the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), National Standards Laboratories, Sydney, Australia 1939-1945 and then Chief of the Division of Physics, CSIR/CSIRO 1945-1958. Earlier he was Lecturer in Physics at the University of Sydney 1916-1939.

Briggs' career included working for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (1939-45), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research (1939-58) and the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission (1945-58). Briggs did his PhD under E. Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge University (1925-26). President of the Australian Institute of Physics (1950-52).
