Biographical History

Speaker, hostess, and columnist, Cooper was the wife of John Sherman Cooper, Republican Senator from Kentucky (1946-1948, 1952-1955, 1957-1973), ambassador to India and Nepal (1955-1956), and first official U.S. representative to the German Democratic Republic (1974-1976). For many years, Lorraine Cooper wrote a Washington newsletter for Kentucky newpapers, reporting to her husband's constituents on social and cultural events in Washington. She served on the boards of The Asia Foundation (San Francisco), The Asia Society (New York), and the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky.
