Biographical History
Colorado lawyer and legislator. B. Sept. 28, 1837 Lewiston, Pa. Educated Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa. and practiced law in Pa., Mo., and Ind. before being appointed 1870 by President Grant as Associate Justice of Colo. Supreme Court. Lived 1870-1885 in Central City, Colo. Elected to U.S. Congress 1876 and served, except for one session, until 1885. Lived Denver, Colo. 1885-1910 where he practiced law and remained active in politics. His fiery speaking style and red hair earned him the nickname "Red-headed rooster of the Rockies." Mount Belford, in Colorado's Collegiate peaks, named after him.
