John Bell Hood (b. June 1, 1831, Bath County, Ga.-d. Aug. 30, 1879, New Orleans, La.), Lieutenant General in the Army of the Confederacy, graduated from West Point in 1853. He commanded the Texas Brigade, led at the battles of Gaine's Mill, 2nd Bull Run, and Antietam, and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg (1863). He directed three divisions of the Army of Tennessee at the Battle of Chickamauga and lost battles at Atlanta, Franklin, and Nashville. He gave up his command in January 1865 and surrendered in May of that year.
