Biographical History
Biographical Note: Joseph Sweetman Ames (1864-1943) was a physicist, professor (1891-1926) and president (1929-1935) of The Johns Hopkins University, and chairman of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.
Ames took his B.A. and Ph. D. (1890) degrees from Hopkins. In 1886-87 he studied with Helmholtz at the University of Berlin. Returning to Hopkins Ames studied spectroscopy with Henry Rowland and succeeded Rowland as director of the Physical Laboratory in 1901. Among Ames's published works are "A Manual of Experiments in Physics" (1896), "Theory of Physics" (1897), "Textbook of General Physics" (1904) and "Theoretical Mechanics" (1929).
